Lent 2014

Meditations for Lent 2014

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Mt 5:3)

Dear ICCG Friends,

During this Lenten period, we would like to reflect with you on the Beatitudes found in the Gospel of Saint Matthew (5:1-12).

This year, following a suggestion by Pope Francis, we would like to begin by reflecting on the first Beatitude: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven (Mt 5:3). For 2015 the suggestion is: Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God (Mt 5:8). Then, in 2016, our theme will be: Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy (Mt 5:7(.

Preparing to celebrate Ash Wednesday and Lent 2014

This year the inspiration for our Lenten meditations and activities comes from two strictly connected documents of  Pope Francis.

The first one is the Pope's Lenten Message on poverty (http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/francesco/messages/lent/documents/papa-francesco_20131226_messaggio-quaresima2014_en.html), that underlines the difference between misery and poverty and reminds us that Jesus loves the poor who have a great richness to share with us.

Scouts and Guides are called to be "poor in spirit", discovering the joy of sharing what they have with those that they meet or their scout and guide brothers and sisters, according to the Scout and Guide Law.

The second one is the Pope's Lenten Message for the World Youth Day 2014 (http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/francesco/messages/youth/documents/papa-francesco_20140121_messaggio-giovani_2014_en.html), on the theme: "Blessed are the poor in sprit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Mt 5:3), that will help us to prepare for the World Youth Day that will be celebrated in Poland in 2016, whose theme will be: Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy (Mt 5:7).

Let us learn to have the courage to "poor in spirit" when the world calls upon richness and fame.

Game: The Recipe of Everlasting Life

Setting:

The richest man in the world (a leader) is always busy in watching ads on TV, in order to buy the latest products and have them to be shipped to his palace. He has built a house with so many rooms to host what he buys that he doesnt even know how many rooms he has. In each one of them there is a TV set, in order to be always up to date.

Materials:

What is needed for the various games simulating the trip through the Sahara desert.

Rules:

Divide participants in teams. Each of them will be rivaling with all the others in the various steps of the game. The game will be gained by the team that scores the most (points will be assigned during the various steps of the game).

Step one: the power of TV.

Each team will be a TV troupe presenting the rich man a TV spot to advertise a product. The rich man will decide which team wins this contest.

Finally a leader comes is. He is a global seller who will present the Recipe of Everlasting Life. This is a product that cannot be ordered, it is necessary to go pick it up crossing theSaharadesert.

Step two: preparation for the trip.

The rich man decides to leave to get it and calls up onto the teams. Each of them will have to prepare a set of three big suitcases containing:

- The first one what is absolutely essential

- The second one what is deemed necessary

- The third one what could make the trip comfortable.

)suitcases will have a limited space and the teams will have to choose among a given number of pictures of various items that are in the palace. Much will have to be left at the palace for lack of space).

The rich man will decide which set of suitcases suits him the most and assign the victory of the first phase of the game to the team who prepared it.

Step three: the trip.

During his trip in the desert, the rich man find himself in the middle of a storm. He asks the teams to look in the suitcases but there will not be strong canvas tents to protect them but only beautiful and very light fabrics, that are useless. Luckily near him there is another traveler,a poor pilgrim, (a leader) who offer help, that the teams will receive after completing a relay race or other game using some fabric.

Once the storms is over, the rich man would like to resume his trip but the sand has totally modified the place and he will ask the teams to ask for the help of a Bedouin in the desert (a leader) who will help them by offering a map and a compass after they gain them with an orienteering game.

The game continues simulating the lack of fuel, water, etc. Leaders will offer help after the teams have completed small games focused on what is missing (e.g. if water is missing then a relay game where team members have to carry water into paper glasses on their head could be suitable, etc.).

Step four: the secret of the Recipe

After such a trip, the rich man gets to the little village owing the Recipe of Everlasting Life. He gives the prize to the team that scored the most.

He then looks for the seller (a leader) explains that its secret is in the sharing he has been living during his trip in the desert with the people he met (the leaders): even if they were poor they shared the little they had without expecting nothing in return.

At the end of the game you can read a passage from the Popes Lenten Message or from the Gospel of Luke (4, 1-1)."
